When OceanCliff Was Shamrock Cliff: A Flashback to Disco Parties by the Sea

When you step onto the stunning grounds of OceanCliff, with its sweeping views of Narragansett Bay and timeless elegance, it’s easy to feel transported to another era. But long before it became one of Newport’s most sought-after wedding venues, OceanCliff was known by a different name: Shamrock Cliff.

Shamrock Cliff: A Gilded Age Legacy

Shamrock Cliff, now known as OceanCliff, was constructed between 1894 and 1896 for G.M. (Gaun McRobert) Hutton, a Baltimore steel industrialist, and his wife, Celeste Marguerite Winans. The mansion was designed in the Romanesque style by the architectural firms Peabody & Stearns of Boston and the McNeil Brothers. Notably, the landscape design was crafted by the esteemed Olmsted Brothers, with Frederick Law Olmsted, renowned for designing New York’s Central Park, as a principal.

One of the largest of Newport’s summer cottages, Shamrock Cliff is characterized by its sprawling splayed-U-plan, rough-cut granite construction, and a complex polychrome-pantile cross-gable roof. Dominating its profile are two prominent towers: a four-story tower at the east end of the south wing and a three-story tower at the intersection of the main block and the north wing. The mansion’s design is further accentuated by large, regularly spaced chimneys that complement its low-slung profile.

Disco Nights at Shamrock Cliff

Fast forward to the 1970s, and Shamrock Cliff was enjoying a new kind of popularity. During this vibrant era, the mansion played host to glamorous disco parties that drew locals and visitors alike to dance the night away under glittering lights. The mansion’s waterfront ballroom and elegant setting made it the perfect backdrop for these lively gatherings, where the pulse of disco music filled the air and guests dressed to impress.

These parties became the stuff of legend, adding a colorful chapter to the mansion’s storied history. While the disco era eventually faded, its influence and energy left a lasting impression.

A vintage poster from this era reflects the venue’s lively atmosphere:

From Shamrock Cliff to OceanCliff

Initially serving as a private residence, the estate passed to the Huttons’ daughter, Elsie Celeste Hutton, upon her parents’ passing. In 1958, Elsie sold the property, leading to its transformation into a hotel and resort known as OceanCliff—a name that reflects its stunning coastal location and luxurious appeal. Today, OceanCliff stands as a premier destination for weddings and celebrations, drawing guests from near and far to experience its timeless charm.

While OceanCliff has transformed from its days as Shamrock Cliff, its history remains an essential part of its identity. The echoes of disco nights and Gilded Age grandeur still linger, providing a rich and fascinating history to the elegance and beauty of the venue today.

From disco nights to timeless weddings, OceanCliff continues to be a place where unforgettable memories are made.

Dog Wedding Chaperones: A Must-Have Trend for Your Big Day

Planning a wedding involves countless details—from choosing the perfect venue and selecting the menu to deciding whether Aunt Edna’s interpretive dance deserves a spot on the itinerary. But for dog owners, there’s another important consideration: should your four-legged fur baby be part of your big day? Do dog wedding chaperones exist?

Including pets in weddings has become increasingly popular. In fact, according to a WeddingWire survey, 38% of pet owners choose to have their furry companions involved in their celebrations. And it’s easy to see why—dogs are family, and having them by your side on such a special occasion can make the day even more meaningful. Whether they serve as the ring bearer, walk down the aisle with you, or simply pose for photos, their presence adds a personal and heartfelt touch to the event.

That said, bringing a dog to a wedding requires careful planning. Weddings can be overwhelming for pets, with large crowds, loud music, and long hours. There’s also the practical aspect to consider—asking a guest to take on pet-sitting duties means they might miss out on key moments, and managing transportation, potty breaks, and overall care throughout the event can quickly become stressful.

Fortunately, there’s a simple solution: hiring a professional wedding day dog chaperone. These experts ensure your pet is comfortable, entertained, and well cared for throughout the celebration. From handling walks and bathroom breaks to making sure your pup is photo-ready, a chaperone allows you to enjoy your wedding day without worrying about your furry friend’s needs. With the right planning and support, your beloved dog can be part of your wedding in a way that’s fun, seamless, and stress-free for everyone involved. These experts ensure your pet is well cared for throughout the celebration, allowing you to enjoy your wedding without any added stress.

And the Winner Is… A Recap of the Mac & Cheese Smackdown!

We had an absolute blast participating in the seventh annual Mac & Cheese Smackdown during the Newport Winter Festival! The event was held at the Newport Marriott, and the atmosphere was electric as foodies flooded in, ready to sample and vote for the best mac-n-cheese. The competition was real, with a total of twelve incredible local restaurants competing for the top spot, and we were thrilled to be part of it all.

The day was filled with endless flavors—it was no small task to choose the best among so many creative and delicious takes on mac-n-cheese. Our dish—a rich four-cheese mac (gouda, gruyere, parmesan, and extra sharp cheddar)—was topped off with brown butter parmesan toasted breadcrumbs, which we proudly presented to the crowd.

The competition began with Wharf Southern Kitchen and their Guinness cheese sauce mac, followed by Safari Room showcasing our signature four-cheese blend. From there, the tasting journey continued with everything from brisket-loaded macs to lobster Florentine creations. Despite the amazing variety of dishes, the response to our mac-n-cheese was fantastic, with many voters praising its creamy texture and savory breadcrumbs.  We loved hearing feedback and seeing how each unique take sparked different opinions. Some even suggested that the competition needed categories like “Best Classic” and “Most Creative,” and we couldn’t agree more—it was such a fun, dynamic event!

At 3:30pm, the winners were announced. We were absolutely thrilled to take home third place—and even more excited to be recognized for having the best décor of the event! The entire experience was a fantastic reminder of the amazing talent and creativity within our community. The winners from Rising Tide Barbeque—an impressive first-year contender—deservedly took the first-place spot, and Skiff Bar came in second, with everyone celebrating the spirit of the competition.

It was a day filled with delicious mac, camaraderie, and friendly competition. Thank you to everyone who voted for our dish and made this such a memorable experience for all of us at Safari Room! We’ll definitely be back next year, ready to cook up more cheesy goodness and bring even more fun to the festival!

This wedding was an absolute chef’s kiss of elegance, romance, and straight-up Mediterranean magic. From the moment guests arrived, they were greeted with crisp whites and ocean blues, lush greenery, and candle-lit ambiance that made the whole evening feel like a scene from a romantic movie. And let’s talk about the food—because, let’s be honest, no Mediterranean-inspired wedding is complete without a feast. We’re talking fresh seafood, artisanal cheeses, and olive-oil-drizzled everything. Bellissimo!

The ceremony took place on our picturesque lawn, overlooking Narragansett Bay, where the couple exchanged vows with the Atlantic as their witness. (Cue the collective aww from all of us.) The reception? A lively celebration with dancing under the stars, breathtaking views, and a whole lot of love.

A Memorable Evening at OceanCliff: Celebrating “The Wedding People”

OceanCliff Hotel in Newport, RI, was the enchanting backdrop for an unforgettable evening as we hosted the book launch and cocktail party for The Wedding Peopleon August 7th. This bestselling book, which draws inspiration from the timeless elegance and charm of our very own venue, brought together guests for a night of celebration, conversation, and literary delight.

The event took place on the Upper Deck at OceanCliff, offering breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay.
